Many education challenges affect children from low income countries including Malawi such as hunger, lack of tuition fees, and shortage of teachers, classrooms, learning resources and poor menstrual hygiene management.
Several organisations including the government have projects to solve other challenges but there is no visible commitment to the menstrual management challenge!
1 out of 10 girls in low income areas is absent from school for 4/5 days during each month’s cycle because they commonly use a one layer of thin chitenje fabric which does have any absorption power and usually leaks exposing girls to ridicule by their friends.
This has pushed girls to stay out of school for the whole menstrual cycle and resume class attendance upon menstrual cycle completion.
Most girls/ families have never heard of disposable sanitary pads and do not know where they can get the pads, and even if they did, most families cannot afford to buy pads monthly due to low incomes.
Repeated monthly absenteeism takes toll on educational attainment. Thats why we set up Tina Pads - to provide not only a reusable sanitary solution but one that was tested and high quality.
