Bareebo is a community development organization that works in rural Cambodia. We work on water, food, and capacity building issues. In the area where we work, zero households are hooked up to a centralized water system and zero households have indoor plumbing. It makes both health and financial sense for families to have a reliable source of water near their home. What is this water source? Rainwater. Water from rooftops drains into roof gutters, which drain into a pipe that then brings the water to a 4,000 liter storage cistern. Bareebo sells these 4,000 liter (1,053 gallons) rainwater storage cisterns at a very affordable cost. If managed correctly, the water can last a family of 5-7 for the entire dry season! During the rainy season, the cistern is essentially full for 7 months. The water is also cleaner than other water sources that people often use during the dry season, such as rice fields, ponds, streams, and ditches.

In the Banan district of Cambodia, there are more than 20,000 households that are water stressed and need Bareebo`s 4,000 liter capacity cisterns. Of these 20,000 potential customers, there are more than 500 businesses and 6,000 large commercial farms that have the ability to pay full price for our cisterns. For the remaining 13,500 households, around 12,500 will need a partial subsidy and 1,000 of the poorest households will need to have the cost of the cisterns fully subsidized. For these 13,500 households, there are many non-profi t organizations in the area that run safe water programs; there are also government-run safe water programs, as well as Bareebo`s own safe water program that helps lower income households meet costs via grants and private donations. Unlike the other programs, Bareebo is the only manufacturer of these high quality, long lasting, water collection cisterns.
