Description

The aim of The Seventh East Nusantara Conference (ENUS7) is to create a platform whereby linguists and anthropologists can discuss the latest insights of their work relating to the languages and peoples of East Nusantara. The conference also seeks to bring together scholars from relevant fields such as (oral) history, archaeology, and genetics, with the specific aim of understanding migration patterns and history of contact in the region.

For the purposes of this conference, the East Nusantara region is taken to include Austronesian as well as non-Austronesian communities in eastern Indonesia (east of Bali) and Timor L'este.

To date, six International Conferences for East Nusantara languages have been held: three in Leiden (1998, 2001, 2005), one in Canberra (2000) and two in Kupang (2007, 2010). The 2018 conference is sponsored by the VICI project (#27770012) 'Reconstructing the past through languages of the present: the Lesser Sunda Islands', funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), with additional support from Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana Kupang, and The University of Hawai’i at Manoa. A diverse range of Indonesian and foreign researchers, students and educators are expected to attend. We anticipate a lively and informal discussion of current issues in East Nusantara language and culture research, both theoretical and applied.
