Center for Social Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship is the work of social entrepreneurs. A social entrepreneur recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to achieve social change (a social venture). While a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur focuses on creating social capital. Thus, the main aim of social entrepreneurship is to further social and environmental goals. This group consist of volunteers from civitas academica and alumnus of Petra Christian University Surabaya.

Petra Christian University has been playing an important role in the country in moulding future generation especially on giving quality education. In its journey towards its 50 years of age, Petra Christian University with its vision on Caring and Global still has to reflect upon its contribution to the world. With this values, the big theme of Petra Christian University 50 years anniversary is “LIGHT to the world, glory to the LORD” with specific commitment to living green issue. LIGHT itself is the PCU values expected to be developed and practiced by all PCU communities. LIGHT is an acronym of L= Love; I= Integrity ; G= Growth; H=Humility; T-Truth.

As a Christian institution Petra Christian University has a cultural mandate to care for the creation and planet. With this mandate, Petra Christian University, in its 50th anniversary has decided to be a Green Campus to take parts in the efforts of addressing the issue of global warming as well as maintaining a clean and healthy life. This commitment is based on the belief that if every individual in the society, including each member of PCU community, practices a green living lifestyle as a form of responsibility to God as the Great Creator who gives this mandate, the planet will be a healthier place to live in.

The efforts to be a Green Campus can not just limited to the members of Petra Christian University only. It has to be extended into at least the closest neighborhood, The members of PCU is dealing with Siwalankerto communities as the closest neighbourhood in their daily activities. A lot of students are staying in the boarding houses, renting apartments or even living in the houses of local communities in the neighborhood. They also have contacts with small stores or food stalls, or any other business offered by local communities for study purposes or daily needs. Therefore the efforts to be a Green Campus should extend to Siwalankerto Communities. Meanwhile empowerment programs in any forms for Siwalankerto Community as a suburban community has been conducted for several years through service learning programs integrated into the curriculum of PCU departments as well as other community service programs. The PCU Faculty members and students have been working with schools and its Libraries development programs, local people housing projects, small chidren education centers teaching and learning process etc.
